    Dogs: Our Furry Best Friends

    30 May 2024

Dogs, scientifically known as Canis lupus familiaris, have been hanging out with us humans for over 14,000 years! These furry friends started off as our hunting buddies and protectors, but today, they are much more—they’re family.

    A Little History

Way back when, about 60 million years ago, there was this weasel-like creature called Miacis. Fast forward a bit, and Cynodictis (Greek = “slender dog marten”) showed up around 30 to 40 million years ago. These guys looked a lot more like dogs. Eventually, Tomarctus, living about 15 million years ago, came along and is considered the grandparent of wolves and, consequently, dogs.

    How Did We Get Here?

The whole domestication thing is still a bit of a mystery. Most scientists think dogs started hanging around human camps to snack on leftovers. A study in PNAS suggests this cosy relationship began around 23,000 years ago in Siberia. https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2010083118

    Dogs in Our Lives

From hunting and herding to just being awesome companions, dogs have done it all. Here are some cool ways they help us out today:

Police Pups: These dogs sniff out bad guys and illegal stuff.
Therapy Dogs: They help people feel better, whether it’s in hospitals or therapy sessions.
Guide Dogs: Helping the visually impaired navigate the world.
Joy Bringers: Visiting nursing homes to spread happiness.
Emotional Support: Providing comfort and love to their owners.

Dogs are amazing and have been with us through thick and thin. Whether they’re working hard or just being our cuddle buddies, dogs truly are man’s best friend. Their long history with humans and their endless roles in our lives highlight just how special these loyal animals are.
