    Important Beach Tips for Pooches

    30 January 2026

A beach trip with your dog sounds like the perfect day out. Fresh air, open space, and plenty of fun. But while the beach can be enjoyable, it also comes with some hidden risks that every dog owner should be aware of.

Heat and dehydration are among the biggest dangers. Sand and pavement can burn your dog’s paw pads, and dogs can overheat quickly, especially on hot or humid days. Unlike humans, dogs don’t sweat efficiently and can suffer from heatstroke before you realise something’s wrong.

Saltwater is another major concern. Dogs often drink seawater while playing, which can lead to vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration, and in severe cases, salt poisoning. Even small amounts can make your dog very unwell.

Strong currents and waves pose a serious risk, even for dogs that are confident swimmers. Rip currents can pull dogs out quickly, and exhaustion can set in faster than expected.

There’s also hidden debris to watch out for. Broken shells, sharp rocks, fishing hooks, and washed-up rubbish can easily cut paws or cause internal injuries if swallowed.

Finally, many beaches contain toxic algae or bacteria, especially after warm weather or heavy rain. Exposure can lead to skin irritation, illness, or worse.

If you do take your dog to the beach, choose dog-friendly areas, go during cooler parts of the day, bring fresh water, and keep a close eye on them at all times. A little preparation can help keep beach days fun and safe for everyone.
