Surviving the Puppy Stage: What Nobody Warns You About

    21 July 2026

Getting a puppy is supposed to be exciting. And it is – until you’re running on four hours of sleep, cleaning accidents off the floor, and wondering why your tiny “fur baby” suddenly turned into a biting, zooming tornado at 9 PM.

The truth is, the puppy stage can feel overwhelming. Nobody really warns you about the constant supervision, the chewed furniture, or how emotionally exhausting it can be to care for a creature that seems determined to make chaos part of its personality.

One of the biggest surprises for new puppy owners is the guilt. You love your dog, but you may also miss your old routine, your quiet house, and the freedom to leave without planning your entire day around potty breaks and nap schedules. That doesn’t make you a bad owner – it makes you human.

The good news? Most of the hardest puppy behaviours are temporary. Biting eases with training and teething relief. Accidents become less frequent. Sleepless nights slowly disappear. Puppies thrive on consistency, patience, and time – even when progress feels painfully slow.

It also helps to stop comparing yourself to social media. For every perfectly behaved puppy you see online, there’s a hidden pile of shredded paper towels just outside the camera frame.

If you’re struggling through the puppy stage right now, you’re not alone. Nearly every dog owner has had moments of frustration, exhaustion, and doubt. The chaos doesn’t last forever – and one day, you’ll look at your grown dog and almost miss the tiny troublemaker they used to be.
