Why Your Dog’s Bad Breath Shouldn’t Be Ignored

    25 May 2026

“Dog breath” is often treated like a joke, but persistent bad breath can actually be a warning sign that something deeper is going on. While the occasional unpleasant smell is normal, strong or worsening odour usually points to dental disease – one of the most common health issues in dogs.

Plaque and tartar build up quickly on a dog’s teeth, especially if regular dental care is ignored. Over time, this buildup can lead to inflamed gums, painful infections, tooth loss, and difficulty eating. In more serious cases, bacteria from dental disease can even enter the bloodstream and affect major organs like the heart and kidneys.

The tricky part is that dogs are good at hiding discomfort. Your dog may continue eating and acting normal while dealing with significant pain. Bad breath, excessive drooling, red gums, chewing on one side of the mouth, or reluctance to eat hard food can all be signs that something isn’t right.

The good news is that many dental problems are preventable. Regular tooth brushing, dental chews, and routine vet checkups can make a huge difference in your dog’s long-term health. Even brushing a few times a week is better than doing nothing at all.

Your dog’s breath may seem like a small issue, but it can reveal a lot about their overall health. Paying attention early could save your dog from pain – and save you from expensive vet bills later.
