For dogs, Halloween can be a very confusing time. Strange costumes, people constantly appearing at the front door and an endless supply of suspiciously crinkly bags can make for one very interesting evening. But while spooky season can be fun for us, it can be a little overwhelming for our four-legged friends. Here are a few simple ways to keep your pup safe and happy this Halloween.
Keep the treats out of reach
Chocolate, lollies and other Halloween goodies aren’t suitable for dogs, so make sure trick-or-treating treats are kept somewhere your pup can’t sneak a taste. Instead, give them one of their favourite dog-friendly treats when everyone else is enjoying theirs!
Be mindful of decorations
Halloween decorations can be tempting for curious dogs. Keep candles, electrical cords, small decorations and anything they could chew or swallow safely out of reach.
Create a quiet space
The constant doorbell ringing and unfamiliar faces can be a lot for some dogs. Set up a quiet, comfortable spot away from the front door where your pup can retreat when they need a break.
Keep an eye on the front door
With people coming and going, there’s a greater chance of an excited pup making a dash for freedom. Keep doors and gates secure and make sure your dog’s identification details are up to date.
Choose costumes carefully
If your dog is joining in on the dress-up fun, make sure their costume is comfortable and doesn’t restrict their movement, breathing, hearing or vision. And remember, if they don’t enjoy wearing one, there’s no need to force it!
With a little preparation, you and your pup can enjoy a Halloween filled with tail wags, treats and plenty of fun – without any unwanted tricks.
